In February 2009, S2S began working with Palm Beach County to assess the distribution and abundance of manatees in the County. To collect this information, trained pilots and observers conduct aerial surveys twice monthly in a single engine Cessna aircraft. In addition to the manatee surveys, S2S provides valuable data on changes in monthly abundance and identifies human-related interactions that may be cause for concern. Our study will provides the most up-to-date information on manatee use waters and helps the county, state and federal officials develop or revise actions aimed at strengthening their protection.
